On This Day (August 14)…Crossing the Finger Lakes

Dream Theater, Deep Purple, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer performed on this day in 1998 at the Finger Lakes Performing Arts Center in Canandaigua, New York.

The three bands were at this time traveling together in the Northeastern United States. They would soon cross the Canadian border and perform there as well. They finished this tour on the West Coast of the United States.

This tour was notable as the last time ELP would perform together until a one-off concert in 2010. They premiered the last piece of music they would write together, “Crossing the Rubicon”, on this tour. It would be the opening number to ELP’s sets, replacing the usual “Karn Evil 9: 1st Impression, Part 2”. This would come second on the setlist.

Deep Purple also included brand new music on their setlist, namely songs from their newest album Abandon. It had been released earlier that summer.

None of the three bands were recorded on this night. This is the first time such a thing happened on this tour.
