Deep Purple performed on this day in 1968 at Fillmore West in San Francisco, California.

The band were at this time on their very first visit to North America on an early leg of the Book of Taliesyn Tour. The group had first arrived in mid-October, and would remain on the continent performing until the New Year. This was the last of four concerts the group played at Fillmore West.
What makes these concerts particularly interesting is the inclusion of another band on the bill, It’s A Beautiful Day. This San Francisco-based band would release their own debut album in 1969; one song on the album was a number called “Bombay Calling”. Today, it is widely known as the inspiration for “Child in Time”, a number from Deep Purple’s 1970 album Deep Purple in Rock. Three of the five members of Purple’s second lineup, who would come up with “Child in Time”, performed at these Fillmore West concerts and likely would have heard It’s A Beautiful Day’s performance.
There is no known recording of this particular concert.
