On This Day (February 29)…Purpendicular in Newcastle

Deep Purple performed on this day in 1996 at the City Hall in Newcastle.

The band had released their most recent album, Purpendicular, earlier that month. The band began the tour to support that album in the U.K., providing the first UK dates they had undertaken in five years.

A review from the night that can be found here suggest that the band were in fine form. Interestingly for all the flack he gets in online circles, Steve Morse was noted as being a real hit with the crowd with his instrumental solos!

This concert was recorded and is in circulation online.

I talk more about the venue at which they performed, the Newcastle City Hall, here. Interestingly, according to setlist.fm, it is the venue in Britain where they performed the second most number of times.
