On This Day (February 7)…Works at Princeton

Emerson, Lake & Palmer performed at Princeton University on this day in 1978.

ELP’s Works Tour had taken them to several colleges; this was the second of the well-known Ivy League schools that they visited after Cornell University. This second leg of the Works tour had reportedly been plagued by a great deal of poor winter weather. Some sites reference a delay for this concert, but no actual testimony from the night that I have seen in wanderings throughout ELP social groups have suggested that there was actually a delay due to weather.

The setlist for this tour focused on the recent Works albums, but nonetheless featured a great many old favorites. “Tarkus” still showed up as the usual improvisation spot. Setlist.fm doesn’t even list this concert, for what it’s worth.

As a small, entertaining note, the no-alcohol rule would make this a different show from the earlier ones; a review of one of the Madison Square Garden ‘73 shows makes note of the high amount of drugs in use as that concert!

There is no known recording of this concert.

Thank you so much for reading. If you appreciate what I do, consider donating on my ko-fi page! I’m planning on upgrading my wordpress plan to a premium one, which would allow me to improve my readers’ experience. Since I’m fairly broke, I would love it if the costs were offset a bit. Thank you!
