On This Day (January 23)…Black Moon Over Toronto

Emerson, Lake & Palmer performed on this day at Massey Hall in Toronto, Ontario.

Ticket for the show. Retrieved from here.

ELP were at this time on the second leg of their Black Moon tour. It was the first tour they had undertaken together since 1978, though all three had toured as pairs within larger groups in the 80s. Greg Lake joined Carl Palmer in Asia for a brief stint to fill in for John Wetton. Lake and Keith Emerson later formed Emerson, Lake & Powell, which went on a single North America tour in 1986. Emerson and Palmer joined forces with singer Robert Berry to form Three, which then toured North America in 1988.

The setlist of this concert was a well-balanced look at their career to this point, including numbers from every album except Love Beach. Their most recent album and the one they were ostensibly touring in support of was represented by three numbers, including the title track (source).

The concert was reportedly recorded. I am still searching to independently verify this.

I talk more about Massey Hall, the venue at which they performed, here.

Thank you so much for reading. If you appreciate what I do, consider donating on my ko-fi page! I’m planning on upgrading my wordpress plan to a premium one, which would allow me to improve my readers’ experience. Since I’m fairly broke, I would love it if the costs were offset a bit. Thank you!
