Elvis Presley was born on this day in 1935.
Despite having no formal musical training, even reportedly receiving poor grades in music in school, Presley rose to become the “King of Rock”, as he is now known. His music career, which formally began in 1953, lasted 25 years and inspired a generation to take up rock ‘n roll. His greatest hits are still played on the radio and live. Being an Elvis impersonator is even seen as an acceptable hobby, even perhaps a career if one is good enough.
Today is a good day to celebrate not just the birthday of a man, but a symbol of a larger cultural movement that has yet to lose any relevance.
