On This Day (July 22)…ELP Face the Rising Sun

Emerson, Lake & Palmer performed on this day in 1972 at Kourakuen Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.

This concert was the first ELP ever performed in Asia, the third continent they visited overall. They would not add a fourth continent to their travel itinerary for over twenty years.

ELP were at this time on their Trilogy tour, undertaken to support the album of the same name. Their visit to Japan earned them enduring popularity there, and helped kickstart the popularity of progressive rock as a whole in the country. Before the decade ended, many Japanese progressive rock acts, such as Moondancer and Space Circus, had taken shape.

During this concert, the group were affected by the extremely humid conditions. The Moog Synthesizer even went out of tune to a serious degree during the concert!

This concert is known to have been recorded in audio and visual mediums. Both recordings are in circulation online.
