The band were at this point on their Works Tour, supporting their recently-released and commercially successful album Works, Volume 1. They were currently on a northward trajectory traveling in the American Upper Midwest.

It appears that this show was part of some sort of larger festival or at least set of performances, though I’ve yet to find a source more about this specific “Super Bowl of Rock”. They appeared here with Foghat and the J. Geils band, the second time they had done so on this tour. According to numbers available from the time, they were fairly financially successful. As they were currently on their most expensive tour ever, traveling with an enormous retinue which included a full orchestra and a chorus, they would need massive success to offset the massive costs. Sadly, not every concert they would undertake in this early phase of the tour was as successful as this one…

There is no known recording of this particular concert.
