Emerson, Lake & Palmer performed on this day at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky.

ELP’s first gig in nearly three years marked the beginning of their Works Tour. Their previous Brain Salad Surgery tour had been an incredible auditory and visual spectacle, and never ones to rest on their laurels, ELP attempted to up the ante for this tour. As their recently released Works, Volume 1 had included an orchestra, the tour did as well. To my knowledge, this was one of the first times a rock band took an orchestra on tour; both the Nice and Deep Purple had played one-off gigs with orchestras in 1969 and 1970, but neither had taken to touring with one in the United States.
There is no known recording of this particular concert.
