On This Day (September 14)…The Purple Machine Reaches Leicester

Deep purple performed on this day in 1972 at De Montfort Hall in Leicester, England.

Ticket for the show. Retrieved from here.

Deep Purple were at this time on their Machine Head World Tour, undertaken to support the album of the same name. Machine Head, probably Deep Purple’s most popular album, includes such classics as “Smoke on the Water”, “Lazy”, “Highway Star”, and “Space Truckin'”.

There is no extant setlist for this concert, but if it followed other setlists from around the time, all four of the above-listed songs would have been performed. Also on contemporary setlists were “Strange Kind of Woman” and “The Mule” from Fireball, the predecessor to Machine Head, and “Speed King” from Mark II’s first straight rock release, Deep Purple In Rock. Rounding out the setlist was “Lucille”, originally by Little Richard; this song had the distinction of being the only remaining song on the setlist not written by Mark II.

There is no known recording of this particular concert.
