On This Day (September 21)…Rainbow Come Down to Detroit

Rainbow performed on this day in 1979 at Cobo Arena in Detroit, Michigan.

Announcement for the show. Retrieved from here.

Rainbow were at this time early in their Down to Earth Tour, undertaken to support the album of the same name. They were at this and other early concerts the opening act for Blue Öyster Cult.

For the two dates immediately preceding this one, there’s actually no evidence that Rainbow performed. However, thankfully, the Lansing Star put out an ad about this concert, confirming Rainbow’s appearance. Sadly, it appears to be from an alternate dimension in which Rainbow is led by a musician named Richie Blackmore. There is a chance that this is the same dimension which plays host to Rodger Glover and Don Airley.

This concert reportedly sold 8596 tickets. According to data I have been able to find, this would have left the venue under two thirds full.

A recording of this concert exists, and is in circulation online.

  1. The Rainbow tours are becoming really really interesting to me, thanks to your page; Down To Earth in particular is one that I’m interested about because it has the best lineup in Rainbow history– or well, the one I like the most. If I remember correctly, Rainbow has had a new lineup for every album, which is a thing I’ve always found curious. Anyway, thanks for the information.
