Rainbow performed on this day in 1979 at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Binghamton, New York.
At this time, Rainbow were supporting Blue Öyster Cult as they undertook their Mirrors Tour. They were also promoting their recently-released album Down To Earth, which was at this time around two months old.
If a group is good enough, they wouldn’t have to do stuff like that. Some of the stuff they do is pretty childish.
A thirteen-year-old fan reacting to Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar smash. Retrieved from here.
Interestingly, a review from the night notes the crowd had an unusual reaction to the end of the set, during which Ritchie Blackmore smashed up his guitar. While the move was a common trick of his and usually excited crowds, it apparently upset the Binghamton concertgoers. A young fan even insinuated that such a move was meant to draw attention away from a lack of musical ability, an allegation most wouldn’t dare level at Blackmore!
There is no known recording of this particular concert.
