Musicians responded to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in various ways. With concerts cancelled for the majority of 2020, some chose to do living room concerts. Others reentered the studio. Robert Fripp‘s approach, as usual, seems to be unique. For fifty weeks, starting in 2020 and continuing into 2021, Fripp released a new ambient track every Friday. As of this writing, the project is still underway.
The point of this project is, as the DGM Live entry for each release indicates, is to bring calm to listeners in the midst of an extremely turbulent year. A cynic could note that it would also bring in a lot of money for Mr. Fripp; as each song is for sale for $1 in FLAC format, a completionist would shell out $50 over the course of the project. However, there are free options available for listeners; to this point, every number has been released on YouTube.
Quiet Entries
In total, the project was projected to have fifty entries. However, at the project’s end, there were a total of 52 entries. The earliest come from 2004, the latest from 2009. One recording is a “mystery” recording, with zero date or location information offered.
